On Saturday, Dec. 14th we left Las Vegas and drove several hours to Death Valley National Park at the border of California and Nevada. It was a fairly clear day and we stopped in Pahrump, Nevada for lunch.
After stopping at the visitor's center, we explored Zabriskie Point.
Here is Dad clowning around again on a wall at the edge of a cliff.
That is the "Bad Water Basin" in the distance. We are going there tomorrow to explore that part of the park.
We spent the night at the Longstreet Inn and Casino at Amargosa Valley, Nevada. It was a beautiful place with very friendly staff and nice accommodations.
Inside there was a unique message board that made us feel privileged to be included in the guests that were welcome at the Inn.
Here are Mom and I checking in at the front desk in the lobby of the Inn and Casino. I made friends the lady behind the desk and with everyone I met at the Inn of course.
Behind the Inn, they had their own beautiful pond in the middle of the desert.
Complete with resident geese and ducks for the pond.
The Casino was interesting too, with lots of bright lights and several "one-armed bandit" gambling machines, blackjack tables, and poker tables.
There were also several statues of famous people, including Emperor Napoleon.
On Sunday, Dec. 15th we went back to Death Valley to explore some more of the park. First, we drove up the valley to "Bad Water Basin". This is the lowest point in the continental United States. It is also the place with the highest recorded temperature in the United States (over 125 degrees).
Then, we drove to the Artist's Palette road where we found numerous ledges in many colors.
Then, we visited the "Golden Canyon".
Lastly, we drove further out into the desert to explore Dante's View at the top of a mountain peak.
It was 68 degrees in the center of Death Valley and dropped to 43 at the top of Dante's View.
Tomorrow we are moving on to Northern Arizona to begin exploring that area and to find a warmer climate to spend the Winter in 😊.
