Hi Friends,
On Saturday, July 10th, we drove ten miles south on Route 395 to Convict Lake a popular recreation area for the locals and visitors. This beautiful alpine lake has a rather unique name and an interesting legend to go along with it.
It was September 17, 1871, that Robert Morrison, the County Sheriff, and a Paiute Indian guide, named Mono Jim, tracked six wanted men to this alpine lake. A group of 29 men had broken out of the Nevada state penitentiary in Carson City nearly two hundred miles away. The six who made it to this site, where they had holed up, were all desperate men, being hunted by numerous lawmen and several posses of local citizens.
A shootout ensued and both Sheriff Morison and Mono Jim, the Indian guide were killed. The posse cornered the rest of the escaped convicts and they were taken to Bishop, Ca, a few miles away, where they were hanged for their crimes. The lake and creek that is connected to it have retained the name ever since.
A very nice trail went all the way (over 3 miles) around the lake which made a nice hike for us to take,
The scenery was just beautiful. These majestic mountains are awe-inspiring everywhere we hike.
Wildflowers were blooming in the alpine meadows here too.
The weather started out in the 70;s but had risen to the 90s by the time we hiked around the lake. We checked the weather in Pheonix, where it hit 113 degrees today, and thanked our lucky stars we are in the mountains.
Tomorrow we are going to explore more alpine lakes in the area😎.
