Back to Canyonlands National Park

Hello Everyone,

On Friday, Nov. 9th Mom and Dad left me home in the morning so they could go hiking in Canyonlands NP, where I'm not allowed on trials. It takes nearly an hour to get to the park from Spanish Valley, south of Moab, which is where we are currently staying.

The first place they explored was the Upheaval Dome trail, a moderate trail that covers 1.8 miles up steep Slickrock to a clear view of the geological feature known as Upheaval Dome.

From there, they moved on toward a second overlook, which required a more strenuous hike up and down, then up again on Slickrock trails. Dad had injured his knee the day before, so he stopped partway, while Mom continued to the end of the trail.

That white spot on the upper right side is my Mom nearing the top.

This two-mile-wide, greenish colored rock is an anomaly among the reddish colored surrounding cliffs, and there are two conflicting theories as to its source. One involves a crater created by a meteor impact. The other supports a theory involving a salt dome left behind by a deep inland sea that covered this area millions of years ago. No one knows for sure how it got there.

Next, they went to the Green River overlook where they were treated to another spectacular view of this immense canyon.

In the afternoon we all went back to Ken's Lake for another walk partway around the lake before it got dark. It was bright sunshiny day and the La Sal Mountains in the background were sharp.

Tomorrow we are all going to a new area along the mighty Colorado River for a hike😃.
