Ken's Lake & Delicate Arch

Hi Everyone,

On Wednesday, Nov. 6th we drove a few miles down the road to Ken's Lake a reservoir and recreation park for the city of Moab, UT.  The reservoir is one hundred feet high and holds back the water from Faux Falls, which in turn is created by diverting run-off water from the La Sal Mountains south of town, through a tunnel drilled through the foothills to supply water to the rapidly growing city of Moab.

The lake trail is 3.5 miles around and varies from a dirt track to scrambling over hardscrabble and rocks.

In the afternoon Dad and Mom went back to Arches National Park to see Delicate Arch from the valley viewpoint on the other side of the arch. Visitors are not allowed to approach the arch anywhere near as close on that side and must take a picture from about a quarter of a mile away. Mom had to use a long-range lens to get a good photograph.

This is what it looks like to the human eye from the valley viewpoint.

On Thursday, Nov. 7th  Dad and Mom drove back to Arches NP once more to visit Landscape Arch in the morning light to see if the image was better in that lighting.  Well, it was, and they enjoyed the morning hike out about a mile into the desert to get some nice photographs.

This football-field-sized arch is magnificent to behold in any light.

While they were there they also explored Partition Arch a little better and discovered how it got its name. There is a second smaller window on the left side of the arch and a "partition" in between the two windows.

They came back to our house and we all went out for another walk on the Millcreek Parkway in town. The city of Moab has every right to be proud of their grand walkway that runs from one side of the city, through the central business district to the other side of the city. It follows a year-around stream through several municipal parks and under the main streets to avoid traffic, which in Moab can be daunting.

At the other end of the parkway, there is a bicycle park, complete with jumps and everything.

Tomorrow we are going back to Canyonland National Park to do some more exploring there😃.
